Life at JHU

• US Citizens and US Permanent Residents are encouraged to apply for Federal Student Loans by submitting the FAFSA (Hopkins Graduate Students Financial Aid webpage, Instructions PDF). 

This offer of admission is contingent upon (a) compliance with the University vaccination policy, (b) a satisfactory report from your criminal background investigation, and (c) receipt of appropriate documentation for an official transcript verifying degree completion from the granting institution.

(a) Vaccination Policy

The University vaccination policy lists the required vaccines and describes the process of providing proof of immunization. More information will be available soon.

(b) Criminal Background Investigations (CBI)

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine requires criminal investigations on prospective students entering any professional or graduate program at the School of Medicine. All eligible students will receive an email from Universal Background with instructions about completing the background investigation.

This applies to anyone who has lived in the USA for 3 months or more (all at once, not cumulatively). If you’ve not lived 3 months or more in the USA, then you do not need to complete a CBI.

(c) Official Final Transcript

• Include Degree Information and the Degree Award Date (e.g. BS in Biology awarded on May 24, 2021)
• Must be sent directly from the School to Johns Hopkins (in English)
  • Emailed through a secure reporting service (e.g. Parchment, Credentials, eScriptSafe, National Student Clearinghouse (JHU SOM Graduate Student Affairs – 00200706gs))

• Documents issued from the degree-granting university in a language other than English must be translated and submitted through World Education Services (WES).
• Notes: Transcripts marked “Issued to Student” or handled to the student to then mail to Hopkins are not considered official by the SOM Registrar.

Other things to consider during this time:

• Announcing the Class of 2027: Lynn Gibson will email you a list of your fellow incoming students and our current students’ contact info. 
• International Students will be contacted by the Office of International Services regarding the F1 Visa process.

The SOM Registrar will email you with official registration information and a link to a matriculation webpage. Please make certain we have your correct email address! Review the email and the very dense webpage carefully.

Login for the First Time with your JHED ID:

  • If redirected: Click on “Log In”, Click on “First Time JHED Users Click Here”
  • Enter your JHED ID (in the email!)
  • ID Badge Photo: Upload a passport quality photo!

Matriculation Webpage – Coming Soon!

Make certain to look for the following information on the webpage:

• Email setup (choose: East Baltimore or Medical Campus to get an @jhmi.edu email)
• Insurance: Health, Dental and Vision Insurance through Hopkins / Waiver of Health Insurance (keep for your records!)
• Required Forms: Confidentiality Statement, Honor Code, Military Status (if applicable)
• Required Training Courses: Patient Privacy (HIPAA), Electronic Data Security, Title IX Harassment Prevention, Preparing for an Active Assailant

• Initial Contact: You will receive automated communication to begin the initial immigration document request. OIS (Office of International Services) will provide guidance on immigration document requirements, financial requirements, transfers, travel, visa acquisition, and other topics both in response to individual inquiries and through regular automated communications. Students who have not taken action to request their JHU immigration documentation receive weekly reminders until they have taken that step.
• Pre-Arrival Information Sessions: New this year! OIS is offering three pre-arrival session for all new international students. Please see the Promotional Flyer.
• Post-Arrival Support Session: New this year! OIS is offering Post-Arrival Support Sessions to help international students as they navigate being on-campus. Please see the Promotional Flyer.

Student Health Program (SHP)

Program students in on-campus programs are auto-enrolled in medical and dental coverage for themselves and have the option to enroll into vision coverage. Program students may enroll their spouse, domestic partner, and children into coverage during the annual enrollment period that takes place each July or during the year with a qualified life event. The cost of coverage for Program students is paid by the student. Program students may waive their auto-enrolled coverage if they have alternative medical insurance that meets JHU’s requirements. Waivers are required to be submitted each year. For more information, please visit the Graduate Student Benefits Overview and the Student Health Resources page. Regardless of your health program, you will be required to pay a University Health Services (UHS) annual fee. This will allow you access to an on-campus UHS Clinic. Disability Services Contact Information

The School of Medicine graduate programs are committed to fostering a culture of inclusive excellence. In line with that commitment, we offer confidential and specialized disability support. Of course, loans are funds you eventually have to pay back. Scholarships are award funds you don’t have to pay back. Each student will know more than anyone at Hopkins whether or not they meet each scholarship’s criteria. The following list is by no means exhaustive; it is meant as a starting point for finding information on additional or specific sources of funding.

When applying for funding, you might need confirmation of acceptance, a letter explaining the field of medical physics, a letter of support from the accepting department or school, or something similar.
